Cannot set display resolution in XP

I am trying to change the display resolution in XP. When I Left click on the Display Icon nothing happens. If I right click on the Desktop and go to properties, nothing happens.

Hi danlee

-Give this a try:

-Go to start

-Run

-type in regedit

Check this registry entry, make sure it shows all "0"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\System]"NoDispCPL"=dword:00000000

Be careful about not to change anything without backing the registry first

I have no \System file in the \Policies directory. This is XP Pro, if that makes any difference.

Well, have you tried system restore? When did this start to happen?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode, delete all the video card drivers, and reinstall your video card drivers, reboot?

Stick around for more suggestions.

I booted into safe mode and deleted the video card driver, then reloaded the video card driver(same as before). This did not help.

I tried to do a system restore from November and it wouldn't do it. I got a message that it couldn't do it.

I don't know how long that this has been like this. I never tried to change the resolution before.

I had some problems with foreign programs loaded and used Hijack this to eliminate them. Also had problems with multiple instances of a printer driver, and eliminated that. I may have removed something that I shouldn't have. Everything else seems OK.

Hi Dan,
It might be that the desk.cpl file has been removed/corrupted. You could go to Start>Run and key in:
SFC /SCANNOW <ENTER>
If the above doesn't solve the issue, try extracting a fresh copy of desk.cpl from the install CD to the C:\Windows\System32 folder using the Recovery Console. Here is a description of the Recovery Console, including how to invoke it. Once you're at the C:\Windows prompt, key in these commands (hitting ENTER after each):
cd system32
expand <CDROM drive letter>:\i386\desk.cp_ /y
exit

When you exit the Recovery Console, the computer will automatically restart.
