XP to Win7?

Can an XP machine be upgraded to Windows 7 directly, or does Vista have to be installed first?
Can get a Windows 7 upgrade disk pretty reasonable, but do not have (or want ) Vista.
Have already run the Windows 7 Advisory and my machine exceeds all requirements as far as CPU speed and amount of RAM.

Howdy:

No upgrade path from XP to 7. You will either have to go the Vista route first or buy a full install cd.

You DO NOT have to purchase the full install dvd you CAN purchase the upgrade version of windows 7 but you will have to do a clean install so backup any thing you cannot afford to lose. Also make sure there are win7 drivers available for your specific computer. One thing about having the upgrade version dvd, if you have a system crash that requires a reinstall, you will have problems so it is better to purchase the full version or after you get the computer setup the way you like, do a full backup.

See the following chart

Thanks Renegade.
Had been to that spot, but didn't look like possible. Didn't show as upgrade.
Just looked at the additional notes at bottom, so does look possible.

the chart says custom install. This means you place the upgrade DVD into the drive. Windows7 upgrade DVD will then proceed to do a full install by wiping the drive. It will not do an upgrade. But it will place all of your old files in a folder called windows.old. You will then have to reinstall all programs and some drivers.

Was wondering because I can get a Windows 7 upgrade disk on eBay for less than 1/2 the price of a full install disk.
I am currently running XP Home.
