Can't Get Sound To Work When Hooked Up To Motherboard

I have my speakers hooked up to the motherboard itself, not a sound card which I was using previously as my sound card is not compatible with Windows Vista 64 Bit version.

They don't work though. I've made sure the speakers are turned on & turned up & I've also made sure that the sound on the PC is turned up but still no sound.

Here is my motherboard - http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/...ProductID=2551

Sorry that's not helpful, the speakers work fine, I just tried them in my laptop & I had them working earlier today on Windows XP Pro before installing Vista.

I checked the mobo manual & it says:

Quote:
Azalia Codec

Enables or disables the onboard audio function. (Default: Auto)
If you wish to install a 3rd party add-in audio card instead of using the onboard audio, set this item
to Disabled
I just checked in the BIOS and it's set to AUTO (the only other option being "DISABLED") so it should be working.

Here is the manual incase anybody was wondering - http://europe.giga-byte.com/FileList...35c-ds3r_e.pdf

OK I've managed to set it up so that when I TEST each speaker (see pic below) 5/6 work fine (2 Front, 2 Rear + Sub), but when listening to music in Windows Media Player the sound only comes out of the 2 front speakers, even though sound comes out from ALL speakers when I TEST them.

Please help, thanks.

Since you had another card in there, did you remove the drivers after you removed the card? They could be conflicting with your onboard sound.

If you did this already, try reinstalling the onboard driver.

Let me clear this up as I think you're confused.

I had a 5.1 surround sound card installed earlier today when I was running Windows XP Pro. I then formatted everything & did a clean install of Windows Vista Home Premium x64. I then tried reinstalling the sound card but the drivers weren't compatible with Vista 64 bit version, so I had to resort to plugging the speakers into the motherboard's audio sockets.

Now when I TEST them out in the audio control panel they work perfectly but when I listen to music or play games, only the 2 front speakers work.

What's the brand name on the speakers? And what 5.1 surround sound card?

The brand name on the speakers is Novatech. The sound card was a C Media CMI8738. I installed the driver CD & it said something about not being compatible with this version of Windows

Did you try the website for that card to see if they have an updated driver? never mind, went there myself and it shows not compatible with Vista period. No drivers for anything other than xp and below that. Linux drivers also.

Yep checked there, that's why I've resorted to using the onboard audio, but as I said when I play games & listen to music etc sound only comes out of the 2 front speakers whereas if I test the speakers in the REALTEK control panel, all of the speakers work so it can't be a problem with faulty speakers

I never thought it was a speaker problem. Speakers are hard to break unless you kick them.

Did you try reinstalling Gigabyte's drivers downloaded from their website?

highly dout its a speaker problem.. i have surround sound earphones.. your problem is, is that whatever your are playing with windows media is stereo (2.1 speakers) thuse only 2 speakers working. you can test the surround sound by playing a dvd with 5.1 surround sound. if you still have problems with the dvd, then in media player, go to view, DVD features (i beleive) and makes sure 5.1 is turned on. if you dont have dvd codec for media player, whatever dvd media player you have should have a option for 5.1 surround sound. but again.. the problem with only 2 speakers working is because most mp3's wavs and short films dont come in 5.1.. only stereo
