Verifying User Permissions to a NT Share using an ASP page

I have created a webpage in ASP goes through a couple of directories on another server, gets the names of the files in that directory and makes links for them. The page then lists all those files with links and the user can click on them, which will open the file, where ever on the network they may be.

Some users will not have access to some of these files, depending on the permissions they have on the machines hosting them.

When a user does have access, it opens fine. However, if a user doesn't have access to that file, then all that happens is a blank window will appear, with the full path of the filename in the address bar.

Is there a way to check and see if a user has access to a file on that machine before they try to open it? I don't want just a blank page to appear, because the user will probably think something is wrong, rather than the fact they do not have permission.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Welcome

What kind of Permission setup is it? Windows or the Web Server?
Are the permissions on the individual files or the Network Shares

The permissions would be on the network share, which is how it is currently setup now. There would be serveral folders, each with a different set of permissions. There are no permissions on IIS.

If the user tried to open them over the Network do they get the standard Windows Access Denied prompt?

Yes, the program they try to open it with (excel, adobe, etc..) will say that access is denied or that the file is read only.

Does this only happen when trying to directly open the file from the link
What happens if Right-Click Save As is used?
