Word problems in Office XP

Hi all

I was working on a friends machine a came across some weird problems. One of which is that as I start typing in a new document the whole line goes black and I cannot see what I have typed. This does not happen with existing documents.
I have tried renaming the normal.dot file and restarting word but it does not change a thing. I tried a repair office in add/remove programs but it stalls part way through with no error message. I tried to uninstall office totally but it would not let me do that either, it seems to stall at the same place. Any suggestions as to what I can do?
She is running winME and has other problems but I don´t know if they are all related. But if I can resolve this then I can perhaps start looking at the others.
