HELP !! Start up takes nearly 3 minutes !!

Please can somebody help - We have a new computer AMD Athlone 2.2 GB speed - 60 GB hard drive , 512 Ram and a Radeon 9200 SE 128 mb graphics card.

At first it was up and running in what seems about 40 seconds - but now after intalling a printer , BT openworld Broadband USB , a couple of games and a few other programs. --it now takes between 3 and 4 minutes to get to the screen.

It spends 40 seconds on a black screen auto detecting the primary master etc. - then we get the blue windows 98screen for 45 seconds then back to a black screen which stalls after a line which reads " c\:set path = c : Windows ; windows\ ; windows\command;\ progra~ 1\ATITEC~ 1\ ATICON~1.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for any assistance and I hpe you all have a good xmas.

Try going here and download Startup List. Unzip the files (if you need a program to do so I suggest installing Cam Unzip)
Run the unzipped file and post the log back here
Good Luck

Hi goto Add/Remove Programs and remove Limeshop.
Reboot computer.

Then, goto:
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/
and download Hijackthis to a new folder.
Unzip Hijackthis...., doubleclick on the "Hijackthis.exe",
and click on "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press the "Save Log",,,, save the log,
and copy/paste it into this thread.

Cheers.

I am wondering, was Win98 the original os in the computer? If so, how was it installed?

It was put on by the computer shop - OEM version - we have no disc - they transferred all the required files onto our hard drive. - although it had been back once cos some of the files were corrupt.

Take it back and get a new one with XP! You should always get a disk with a new computer. What sort of hokey place did you buy this piece of junk at?

Been reading all your posts, and for a new computer, you got ripped. If taking back is not an option. Then here is a couple of things you can try.

1. Get into BIOS (usually DEL key at first boot). Make sure USB is enabled.

2. Right Click "My Computer" then to Properties, then to Device Manager TAB. Highlight the entry Computer at the top then go to properties. This will bring up a list of IRQ's, post them here. Could be a IRQ conflict.

3. Using a text editor (notepad is good) open up the file msdos.sys (located in C:\>)

This file controls what Windows looks at when it boots. The first entries should be something like this:

[Paths]
WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

Warning: do not mess with the x's as they need to be there

The following extra entries are used depending on what you want:
[Options]
Autoscan=0
BootGUI=0
BootKeys=1
BootMenu=1
BootMenuDefault=1
BootMenuDelay=5
BootMulti=1
BootWin=1
DblSpace=0
DisableLog=1
DoubleBuffer=0
DrvSpace=0
LoadTop=0
Logo=1
Network=1
SystemReg=0

Here is a good reference to what they mean. Check the Boot Delay and Boot menu. This file is "Read OnlY" so if you make changes you have to uncheck read only.

4. START | RUN type in
msconfig hit OK

Under Start TAB, uncheck everything except systray and explore, now reboot. If it is a lot faster, then one of the programs is making it slow down. You can go back and check one at a time until you find the culprit.

5. In your autoexec.bat file there is an entry:

SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\PROGRA~1\ATITEC~1\ATICON~1

I think this entry starts your ATI video card config program and places an ICON down next to your clock. Could be cause of hanging. Type REM in front of the line and save, this will then cause the line to be ignored. You can always change it back if you want the icon there.

I removed the line but it actually made things worse - the last line read something like troubleshoot /Windows/ ATICON ... it then restarted itself in safe mode and so we put it back in.

I looked in the Start up place using the MS config as suggested but there was no explore or explorer to be seen in fact only system tray and Tweak UI were ticked anyway - is that bad ?

I also used the find files option to find msdos.sys in the c drive and ALSO tried in My computer - not found.

What does it all mean - it doesn't look to good to me.

msdos.sys is probably set to hidden.

In explorer go to TOOLS | FOLDER OPTIONS and check show hidden files, then you should see it.
