I get those alot also and its aggravating!

If I want the window to stay open I gotta specifically open a command prompt,otherwise it just quickly flashes on screen then off....... (Im on Win98se)

I guess this is the same behaviour on all os's??

When? At apparently random times? Or just once during a boot/reboot, then no more until next boot/reboot?

Well for ME its when im doing certain DOS things,netstat for one........... If I just type NETSTAT it just quickly shows and dissapears.... (They should have it stay until you close the window)

This is completely normal and often related to the running of a batch file during boot. Often they open and close so quickly that they are not seen, the only time to be concerned is when the window stays open.

Sorry Ned but I totally disagree.

I would not call it "normal". It may be benign, but at this point, until we get more information, we don't know. It may be malicious - or indicative of something malicious.

For sure, that vast majority of users don't have cmd prompt windows appear without the user manually executing it. Also for sure, no user should have a batch file run at boot unless they (or the legitimate admin of that machine) created the batch file and set it to run with Windows.

Frankly, I would much rather it stay open so I can know and verify what it is and why it is there rather than have it appear and quickly disappear.

As to when this happens, not every day. I know enough to know that window should never appear on my computer. it must be malicious. don't know how to recreate it.

I would not assume it "must" be malicious. Do you normally keep Windows fully updated? Do you have security software installed and keep it updated? Do you avoid being "click-happy" on unsolicited links? That is, do you avoid clicking on every unsolicited link, popup and attachment you see?

If the answer is "yes" to all those things, then it would be extremely difficult for any "malicious" code to get past all your security.

It IS wise to assume it "might" be malicious but it is more likely it is just annoying, unwanted, and unneeded.

I don't see how Firefox's telemetry could be it. FF will send telemetry when running. No need to open a command prompt windows.

Start Task Manager (ctrl-alt delete) and click the Startup tab and see what starts with Windows.

And it would be good to know about this computer. All we know is you are running W7. We don't even know if a laptop or PC.
