No Sound
I hooked up some speakers but my volume icon has a red x on it. I click on it and it says no audio device installed. I went to my device manager and it shows I have High Definition Audio Device and when I click on the properties it says this device is working properly. I checked all my cables and they are good and connected properly. I hear sound out of my speakers when I plugged them in. I've tried everything I can think of.
I have my Vista disk could I re-install windows and not loose any data? Thanks kuzzz |

Hi kuzzz, the HD device could just be the audio driver for an HDMI output of your video card.
Is this a desktop or laptop? On-board sound or add-on PCI soundcard? Steps to try to get Windows to re-install the sound driver. 1) Scan for hardware changes in device manager. 2) Check BIOS for on-board audio to make sure it's enabled. 3) Boot to safe mode, clean out all audio devices from device manager and reboot. |

It is a desktop pc, It is on-board sound. I don't see anyplace to scan for hardware changes in device manager.

I scanned for hardware changes and nothing came up. I went into my Bio's and there was nothing there about sound. I went into safe mode and removed the High Definition Audio Device. Rebooted and it re-installed it. But when I click on the sound icon it still says No audio devices are installed.

tested and no sound. I put my installation disk in and booted up and ran repair and it said it repaired something. In the details it said "System Volume Corrupt". I've tried multiple speaker sets and it doesn't recognize any of them and yet it recognizes my headset. When I plug in my headset the red X goes off my sound icon and I can record and hear.

The headset if plugging into the front of the tower uses a different connector on the mother board.
Go to the manufactures website and see if there is a sound driver, besides HD. Make and model of PC would help. |

I went to e-machines and for my model the driver is different from the one I have. Should I go ahead and install it?

Try it. may work,
Also you indicated you saw "System Volume Corrupt" I would run SFC to see if everything is OK; To do this, click Start, type Command Prompt or cmd in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow (space after "c" and before "/") |
