Trouble using two screens

Basicly I have an HD tv (connected via HDMI) and an HD monitor (though it's connected via VGA).

I set the HDTV to the primary and try to run a full screen game, whilst I keep Trillian open on the second monitor. I basically want it so I can play on my TV, and turn my head to see the chat window.

Except, when I run the full screen game on my HDTV, both monitors flicker (as they always do when a game loads) but any open window I have on the second monitor disappears. if I use alt tab to get it back, the game goes away and I get the chat window on my TV, not the auxiliary monitor.

How do I stop this?

I'm running Windows 7 with an AMD Radeon HD 6700 series card. I also have tried using the free version of DisplayFusion and it did not help.

I've tried it on newer games like Portal 2 and older games like old C&C games.

You stop using your TV as a monitor the D-A converter in the TV is probably causing the flicker because of different refresh rates.

It will probably introduce a slight delay, which is the last thing any ardent gamer wants.

The flickering is irrelevant, I've worked out the flickering is on games that change the resolution. It doesn't happen when I try a game that uses the native resolution. the flickering only happened RIGHT before the game started.

How do I make it so it doesn't hide and take away the chat window on the other monitor?

I'm sorry to double post, but I'm wondering if I should have put this in the Windows 7 section. Does anyone know if I should ask a mod to move this?

I realize this might be extremely impertinent, but I've had this topic open for several days. I was hoping someone might have a more helpful solution.

The one above was sort of like the doctor telling me not to raise my arm if my arm hurts. Unfortunately, I still want to raise my arm.

The refresh rates ARE in fact the same, both 60hz. I was hoping someone could assist me.

I'm truly sorry if I've broken any rules by bumping this.

Did you use Windows 7 or ATI Catalyst to configure the monitors?

I tried using both. First, I just used the windows 7 controls and selected extend display. I then enabled the same settings on Catalyst.

EDIT: At one point, I created an Eyefinity display group and that STRETCHED my display, as I thought it would, but didn't fix it.
