Cloning new HD?

Greetings CTH,

I'm looking to purchase a new internal HD for my desktop, one with a larger capacity, as my current one is getting full.

Is there a way to migrate everything that's currently on my old HD to the new one? In other words, I'd like the new HD to host the OS, programs, etc. and I don't want to reinstall the OS and all of my applications. Is there a way to get everything on to the new HD without reinstalling everything?

I just purchased a program called Acronis True Image Home 2010. I haven't used it yet, but it claims to be able to do what you want.

I found it at Newegg.com

Well, you need to 'clone' or 'disk image' your old hard drive and then simply restore the image to the new drive; there are many options including Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost, or a 'free version' Macrium Reflect - others exist, but I would suggest visiting their websites to determine whether the software will be satisfactory for you.

Although I've used Ghost & Reflect to image the drives on several of my computers, I've never done a restoration or a 'new' drive installation. Hopefully, others will 'chime in' w/ some more experience - good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. Has anyone used Clonezilla before?

Beware of True Image Home 2010. Take a read through the User Forum first:-
http://forum.acronis.com/forums/acro...ue-image-forum

I tried it and had a load of problems.

I changed to Genie Back Up Manager Home:-
http://www.genie-soft.com/products/gbm/us/default.html

Found it an easier and more reliable application to use.

My advice is do it bit of research. Look at the product user forums, if there are any.
"Trial" versions before you buy.

Good luck.
