Yes, most of the new distros will detect new hardware and set a driver for it automatically.

Pretty much so, when I loaded Ubuntu on my old IBM laptop (after replacing a 'dead' HD) last year - my USB sticks, SD cards & portable external HD for backup were detected w/o a problem; an external CD burner was also found & worked; and even tried an older HP scanner & Brother laser printer - both were detected - doesn't prove that all will work, but I was quite impressed as a first time user of a Linux OS -
