Question Cannot play audio / video clips

Hi: I am using WinXP Pro, Asus PB5Deluxe WiFi mobo, 2GB RAM, NVidia 7600GS Vid Card and a 250 GB Seagate HD. Up until just recently, I was able to play back video clips in almost all forms (ie. wmv, mpeg, avi etc)using GOM player. I do not use Windows Media Player. I have uninstalled, re-downloaded and tried again to play the videos on GOM. It opens, displays the name of the file but the screen remains black and is silent (no sound either.) The player is not displaying any errors so as far as I can see, it seems to be operating within it's parameters. Could it be a service that is shut down or am I missing a system file or what? Thanks for any help in rectifying this problem. Gus:

I've never used GOM, but the symptoms you are describing usually occur when you don't have the right codecs installed.

Combined Community Codec Pack (Win2k, WinXP, Vista)

Downloaded the Codec Pack from CCCP but they recommend that before installing their codecs, you should uninstall all codecs on your system. I find that I have different programs with their own sets of codecs so, would it be safe to uninstall all of them first as suggested? Would those programs still do their own magic using the new CCCP codecs? Should I maybe do a "REPAIR" type of Install on WinXP Pro to pick up their codecs again? I don't want to screw up the whole system by installing these. If you say it'll be okay, then I'll do a system restore point and proceed but before I do, is there anything else that might cause this type of error? Thanks again for the help. Gus:

What other programs are you talking about ? and have you installed any codec packs before (like k-lite for example) ?

The CCCP codecs will allow you to watch the following Formats

I don't want to tell you to install CCCP incase you have some specialist need for a certain codec however, I've yet to find a video I can't watch using CCCP.

Hi: Okay, I have downloaded both the CCCP codecs and the XPCodecs. I first did a repair install of Windows XP to be sure that any corrupt files would be replaced etc. Tried again and have audio but no video. After I downloaded the XP codecs, I tried to install but received a message saying it had encountered and error and would have to close. Obviously didn't get any video there either. No I haven't previously installed any K-Lite or other Codecs intentionally. The only other codecs I can identify are those that I mentioned previously. I am willing to keep trying by installing the CCCP codecs or the XPCodecs but want to know, "should I first go into Device manager and uninstall any that are already there, before proceeding with any install"?

you might not be able to have cccp and xpcodec in stalled on the same machine the two programs might be conflicting with each other. All you need is one or the other!!!! if you are trying to play downloaded movies most of the time they are in Avi format
xpcodec with work with that format. Can you tell me what kind of media player you are using?

Do you have DirectX installed? and do you have drivers for your Video accelerator

and do you have the latest video drivers for your graphics chip and the latest Chip Set Drivers?

Hi: Yes, I have DirectX v9.0C installed. Am using GOM Player from Gretech. Has it's own codecs and worked fine up until lately. Have also tried WMP no luck there either. Video Card using V6.14.11.6921 drivers (Up to date, I believe) According to RadarSync (free driver updater), Scan says I'm up to date. I'm aware that I won't be able to install both sets of codecs on same machine. Have tried each individually and no go. Checked Video Codecs in Device Mgr and they all seem to be operating well and are enabled. Seems to me there is something possibly not configured right for the screen to remain black when trying to play a video clip. The ones I get most are .wmv and are very common. Any other ideas or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks for all so far. Gus:

Hi: I believe my power supply is a 350 or 400Watt jobby and I've tried the different resolutions with no luck. I have downloaded divx player, converter etc. and all works when I convert the clips to divx but of course, that's just one or two more steps I have to do. Funny the way it happened. Working one day and not the next. Maybe it had something to do with the system driver and vid card driver updates I carried out a couple of weeks ago. Really weird because when I check the codecs that are installed they all say they are enabled and working properly. Has to be something deeper. Cofiguations of all players cannot be wrong so I've all but eliminated that. Even though I did a repair install of WinXP, it could well be something with the ASUS P5B Deluxe WiFi mobo drivers themselves. Not sure if they are part and parcel with the ICH8 drivers but I do remember updating most all of them plus the video card drivers. A best guess from someone who has had and rectified a similar problem when trying to play .wmv files might hold some clue as to the problem. Thanks for all the help. Gus:

hell no I have winamp and WMP and I can play video files fine

Try rolling back your Graphics card driver since you said that you updated it and that's about the time that your system was unable to play video files that could be the problem.

You can have 20 media players on a system which you won't have a problem with that.

I have Winamp5.X and Windows Media PLayer with Xpcodec on my system no worries

its all about the format of the video the codecs you have installed also graphics chip or card, and Ram.

Well, my RAM is fine and there is 2Gb of it. I rolled back the video card driver by actually uninstalling it and then installing again from the CD with the original version. I then rebooted and tried both GOM Player and WMP with no luck. It seems that other file types play just fine. It only seems to be the .wmv files that are giving me a problem. I tried "Codec Sniper" ( a free program which shows all your codecs and their health) last night. It showed me two codecs which were broken but neither of them appeared to be for video. If I was really brave, I would uninstall all the video codecs and start over but then I might have more problems than I do already. Does "XPCodec" pack conflict in any way with the other codecs that are installed on one's system? If not, I may give them another try. I'm getting desperate. Like I mentioned before, I can use divx player, converter etc. and by converting the files, see them but that's a bummer. Shouldn't have to jump through those hoops. Thanks again. Gus:
