moving email messages

I have a friend who wants to format and reload Windows ME---a fresh start. She has a ton of email messages that need to be saved (for business purposes). How do I save all of her email to disk? I've gone into Windows--Applications--Identities--etc... and copied those files, but when I try to open them....nothing. It says there are no emails in there. What is the most expediant way to back her emails up? Please....step by step. Thanks for any responses.
K.
