when I click on 'Ctrl panel, Admin tools, Services, (alerter, application gateway layer, application manager, automatic updates, e.t.c.) I put them all on automatic and start them up, they are fine 'till I log off, then each time I come back they have stopped and I have to go through the whole list starting them up again,

I'm not positive, on this, but have you ever, click start, run, and typed in msconfig? (System Config. Uility) Your able to view all your running servies, and startup programs.
