Windows XP going VERY SLOW during reinstal!!!!!HELP!!!
(i also posted this topic in hardware)
I don't know what region of the forum this should be posted in...so I'll post here first. I have a
DELL 4550.
2.5 GHZ P4.
256 RAM
A long time ago this computer crashed under the weight of many users, downloading way to many virus-infected programs (my brother and sister). I have no DELL REISTALL CD, I must of lost it. I still have all the drivers and stuff though. A friend of mine let me have acopy of XP professional he had laying around. when I reinstall windows it is VERY SLOW. If you've ever installed windows XP, you know on the left hand side it starts of by listing 39 MINUTES REMAINING. It took me FIVE hours to install the OS. Even the pre setup in bios takes like half an hour. I used the same XP disc, and Hardrive on my other/ older computer and it works like a dream. I should mention, this is the way it was running before I ever even tried to reinstall anything. Also, I have had this processor in my other computer andit works fine. THIS IS THE WEIRD PART...when I am finally in Windows XP after everything is installed, I press ctrl+alt+del CPU usage is 0%, until i click something, or open something...even the smallest file! Page File usage is low as well. Could this be a problem with the motherboard? the processer? the ram? If so is their dos based programs to test these? Or how about dos based virus scans...anything I can run before the windows loading screen. HELP!
