Question Brits: Analog switch off

Anyone know when we're goin' all digital?

There's loads of different estimates on the net but I don't know what to believe.

Cheers

Tom

You'll be able to make your own multi movie DVD's then ... 4 movies per disk and they'll look just like your old VHS

Cox Cable is big around here. Big promotion to combine all your needs in one 'low cost' (what do you call low?) package. Digital Cable TV channels, digital internet, and digital telephone....All In One. One bill, no probs.
I love one of their commercials:
Man holding phone up listening to dial tone.
Wife asks, "What are you doing?"
Man: "Listen Honey, doesn't that sound great?"
Wife: "Sounds like it did before."
Man: I know. Ain't it great? The upstairs phones sound this way also."
Is this where I insert....DUH.
I've seen digital cable tv right along side regular cable and saw no difference in picture or sound.
I have some VHS tapes from 20 years ago that still look great in picture and sound.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm for digital. But for some things, it's just a money 'thang'.

With a good DVD burner, quality cables, and good VCR, your converted tapes should be exactly the same in sound and picture and last a long time.

The sound will be perfect, but quality would be a wee bit pixellated

All you have to do is take a few movies on DVD, rip them, then re-encode them to the worst possible video and audio quality and resolution. Disable chapters, multiple audio channels, subtitles, and special features. Then burn them back onto DVD. And play. Viola, you now have your own DVD simulating the VCR experience!

For added simulation, make sure you give the DVD a couple of scratches each time you play it (to simulate VHS magnetic tape wear), and every once in a while, just take a sledge hammer to one of your DVDs (to simulate the occasional "VCR chewing up the tape").

Ahhh, those were the days!

For some reason when I listen to analog sounds, I just got used to the sound sometimes there'd be this faint sound kind of like a semi-truck, in the background.

WIthout it, it loses it's old thing I remembered and when I heard that I knew I was watching a movie. I don't know probably just me.
