Win2k Computer running very slow.

I have a computer with Win2k AMD-k6 500 MHz with 256 MB Ram and it is running slower than my Win98 233Mhz Computer with less memory. It takes a long time for programs to load and surf the net on a DSL line. Doing multiple task really slows it down to a snail. Is there a major difference in the Operating Systems Win2k vs Win98 that really affects the processing speeds? Any suggestions in what to look for is appreciated. Thanks

Well, there are some big differences between 98 and 2k, and 2k itself does require more RAM than 98. There are also alot of different thaings that can effect the speed of your PC. Do you notice your hardrive running alot on the 2k system? That is a sign of low RAM. Extra programs running would contribute to this. Be sure to close any background apps that aren't needed. BTW, I would expect a 2k, K6 500 with 256 RAM machine to runa bit slow.

My 98 machine only had 64 MB RAM compared to my Win 2k that has 256 MB. But if you expect that with only 256 MB on an AMD K6 500 to be slow anyway I guess I have to live with it, unless there is anything else to check.

You could run an app like crapcleaner found here: http://www.cybertechhelp.com/download/file/ccleaner

That app gets rid of a heap of unused files and stuff that could bog the computer down. Also do a good defrag of the hard drive that can help data access times. Make sure the computer is free of spyware and viruses as they can slow a computer down drastically. Finally there is a tweak section for Windows 2k at the top of this forum I believe you would find some good hints in there on how to speed things up a bit.
