I am on the verge of a meltdown...help me please !
I was not paying attention when I did this, but I compressed my Vista Ult HD and now I am unable to boot normally. Was getting the BOOTMGR compressed message on boot up and tried several things found on this forum but I have been stuck on BOOTMGR missing for 3 days now and I have tried EVERYTHING imaginable. I just want to salvage my data. Can I add a secondary HD, to boot up and transfer all my files through explorer ? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !

I compressed my system drive last nite and on reboot this morning had the same message saying the 'bootmgr is compressed press ctrl alt del'. I ran across a post at another forum saying to run: "bootrec /fixmbr" from a command prompt and that had me back up and running in seconds...after spending most of the morning unsuccessfully trying to do a repair.
I also bought a new Seagate 250 G SATA hdd ($42) thinking the drive might be fux0red. I was so happy to have my system back I dont even feel bad about buying the drive. Actually thats not a bad price either. Oh, to get to the command prompt I booted off the Vista dvd, selected 'Repair' then selected command prompt. I have to wonder what sort of a bug in Vista this is. |

This fixed it, and it was a lot faster, and simpler than decompressing my hard drive. |
