if it is oem, it can never be installed on another computer. besides, most likely it will not work since it is a different computer. different computer, different hardware, different drivers.

If you by chance have the Vista CD that came with it, then you can transfer the image and do a repair install, may work.

If the motherboard failed you didn't lose all your stuff cause nothing gets saved to the motherboard. The hard drive is probably still OK and can be installed as a secondary drive in another machine to recover your stuff, but the installed programs will not run. There is a chance if you can get an identical motherboard to replace the bad one (assuming your sure its the board) you could still re-register with MS with the serial numbers on the back of the PC. You need an identical board so the drivers do not conflict. It is possible to remove drivers of the board from safe mode and get a new board to work but its iffy and complicated.

Acronis True Image has Premium Edition that can help you to restore your Vista to different PC – so even if it’s different motherboard, it will have you covered. On the Microsoft side – well, if it came with PC, it’s called OEM – and you cannot reuse it on another machine. However, if the new machine also came with Windows, you may want to try your luck with M$ support, as your new machine is also licensed. Technically you would only need your Vista re-activated after recovery by Acronis.
