Crashes

Hello, I am not sure if my problem is due to vista or just my computer but i have a problem with my computer just crashing. Sometimes I get diagonal lines of blue, white, yellow, black and grey that are kinda jagged across my computer screen. Other times my screen just goes black and I can not do anything about it. the lights stay on and I have to unplug my computer to let the battery die sometimes and other times I just have to close the lid until it recovers. Is this a program problem or a part problem. I have checked for viruses and cleared up some space in hopes it would help the problem. It did not work. I appreciate any help i can get!
