strange...please help

I have a new laptop about a month old, last night i checked into a hotel and signed onto the hotels wireless service. It worked fine last night, only when I logged onto my computer today all the icons on my desktop aren't working properly. I click on something like my internet explorer and It opens internet properties. I tried to use my AOL service and the login wont except text in the password box. I can get the internet explorer to work if i open it through the start menu, but when i try to replace the icon with a new one it still opens internet properties. is it a virus? please help. I use my computer for my business so i would appreciate the help

Thank you
