Yes, your operating system is infected krcvrly. Looks like a possible rootkit infection too. It also looks like you have no antivirus program installed. Any reason why not?

Download the latest version of Combofix.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.

Doubleclick on combofix.exe and follow the prompts. A window will open with a warning. Type "1" (and Enter) to start the fix. When the scan completes, Disk Cleanup will run and then a text window with your log will open. Please copy and paste that log back here.

A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Copy this log in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Also go here and download Silent Runners.vbs to a new folder on your Desktop (Clicking the the download link works if you use IE. If you use FireFox, rightclick on the link and choose "Save Link As") and run it. It generates a log too. It takes a minute or two and it will notify you with a popup when your log is ready (make sure you wait for the popups please) Please post the information back in this thread too (you may need to make a couple of posts). If your antivirus program queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.

Please download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop.

Reboot into Safe Mode (reboot and tap the F8 key continuously as your computer restarts and select Safe Mode).

In Safe Mode, doubleclick on SDFix.exe and allow it to extract to it's own folder. Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.

Type Y to begin the script. It will remove any Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot. When you hit any key, your computer will reboot. Your system will take a lot longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.

When your desktop loads, the utility will complete the removal and display Finished. Press any key again to end the script and load your desktop icons. Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of Report.txt back in this thread with a new HijackThis log and a new Silent Runners log please.

Hitting F8 does not give me the option of starting in Safe Mode. Instead, it lets me pick which disc (I think?) to boot from. There are only 3 options. But this isn't the Windows startup screen. I've tried pressing different F keys but nothing happens.

It can be a bit tricky. You need to wait for the POST routine to finish before you start pressing F8. Do you see "Please Select Boot Device" with the following three options: Removable Device, Hard Drive and CD-ROM or similar?

If so, choose Hard Drive and press F8 now.

Is the below startup something you installed yourself?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Vista Sidebar] C:\Program Files\Vista Sidebar\sidebar.exe

Download the free version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here to your Desktop and doubleclick on the executable to install it.

Launch AVG Anti-Spyware (there should be an icon on your desktop, doubleclick it if the program does not open). The program will now go to the main screen.

You will now need to update AVG Anti-Spyware to the latest definition files. On the left hand side of the main screen click update and then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. Do not run a scan yet.

When you have done this, boot into Safe Mode (restart your computer and tap F8 continuously as it restarts).

Run AVG Anti-Spyware now. First click on Settings > Recommended Action and change it to Quarantine. Next look at Reports and uncheck "Only if threats were found". Dont change any other settings.

Click on the "Scan" tab and click on "Complete System Scan" to begin scanning. When the scan is finished, look at "Set all elements to" and click to change to "Quarantine" if this option is not displayed. Click on "Apply All Actions" and then click the "Save Report" button at the bottom of the screen. Click on "Save Report As" and save the report to your desktop. Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

Reboot and post a new Hijack This log and your AVG Anti-Spyware report. Also post a new Silent Runners log please.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Vista Sidebar] C:\Program Files\Vista Sidebar\sidebar.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Blaero Start Orb] C:\Program Files\Blaero Start Orb\Blaero Start Orb.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Styler] C:\Program Files\Styler\Styler.exe
