Restoring desktop icons
I somehow messed up the icons on my desktop. instead of them showing as the icons associated with the corresponding websites, they are just the generic windows icons. Can someone please try to help me fix this? I tried restoring to an earlier restore point, but no luck. They work fine when I click on them, however I can't always read the description, so it's just easier to have a visual cue as to what they are associated with ex; youtube, hoopla, cybertechhelp, etc. It's only the icons associated with websites that are affected. All the other ones are fine.
thank you so much Jim |

Welcome to CTH Jim.
Sounds like you lost your favicon associations on your desktop. And I don't think there is any way of restoring all that. Hopefully you do not have too many and you could just recreate them. |

How do I recreate them. I tried dragging the little padlock from the top address bar to the desktop and it still ends up the same way:A generic windows icon. It's kind of odd, but in the recycle bin the icons are shown there properly.Any new icons, however I drag there show up as the generic windows icons. Thanx for your help.

It sounds like your icon cache is corrupted.
See this: Purge & rebuild the Icon Cache in Windows 8/7. |

Does anyone know how I can fix that. I tried going back to an earlier restore point, but that didn't help.

I am assuming Firefox stores it's favicon data, which provides what you are missing from your icons, in some folder or file. So completely removing and then reinstalling Firefox will likely correct the situation.
First, download the latest version of Firefox and save it to your desktop. Next, save your bookmarks to an html file to restore afterwards. Next, completely remove Firefox from your computer. I have no idea about using that GeekUninstaller utility, but if I were doing this, I probably would not use it. Be sure to reboot after. Then reinstall Firefox, restore your bookmarks, and see if that fixed things. |

Ok that worked. I actually tried uninstalling and re-installing firefox at one point with no success, but what I did not do was uninstall the appdata flolder. Everything is good now. Thanx so much guys.
