HJT possible malware issue...

After clicking out of a website, I find a full screen ad waiting right underneath, I guess they are called pop-ups. I had installed a pop-up remover offered by AT&T but this software prevents me from opening links that I get in my emails. When I removed the software, these ads returned.
I have been advised here that this might be malware.

Hi Ora and welcome to CTH. My name is Wes and I will be looking through your logs. Since I'm in training there may be a small delay in my post since all post must be approved by a spyware expert.

I need to see another type of log. Please do the following:

Click here and download Silent Runners.vbs (clicking the the download link works if you use IE. If you use FireFox, rightclick on the link and choose "Save Link As") to a new folder on your drive and run it. It generates a log too. It takes a minute or two and it will notify you with a popup when your log is ready (it will be in the new folder you created). Please post the information back in this thread. If your antivirus program queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious.

Hi Ora,

Well no major infection showing in your logs. However your popups are probably coming from a toolbar installation. I see traces of a HSN toolbar but all the popups I recieved had the HSN logo on them so the culprit is probably the RX toolbar which was probably installed without your knowledge.

Lets take a look and see what's all installed on your computer.

Please do the following:

Open Hijackthis.
Click Config - Misc Tools - Open Uninstall Manager.
A list of the entries in Add/Remove programs will appear.
Click on Save List...
The list will be saved as 'Uninstall_list.txt'
Copy & Paste the contents back here for review.

Okay....

As far as HSN toolbar, it still appears in my add/remove programs but I do not use it. The majority of the popups that are appearing have to do with those 'find a match' type websites and one is an embarrasing x-rated match site. Not one is about HSN. Anyway followed your last instructions:

Ora,

How is your computer running at this time and are you experiencing any popups at this time?

We have just a few cleanup steps to perform. Please do the following:

STEP 1

Open the notepad and copy/paste this code in a new text. Save it. Name it Fix.reg (Don't forget in "type" of files to choose "All files".

Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\ShellBrowser]
"{57ECFB59-CD00-4B9D-961A-704E762AC529}"=-
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"{57ECFB59-CD00-4B9D-961A-704E762AC529}"=-
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{57ECFB59-CD00-4B9D-961A-704E762AC529}]
Double click Fix.reg and answer "Yes" to merge it with the registry.

STEP 2
Go here and download ATF cleaner.

Use it to remove all Temp Files, Cookies and Temp Internet Files, Java Cache and any others that you would like to remove. If you also use Opera or Firefox, also click on the cleaning options for each browser

STEP 3
Disable your antivirus program and go here and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Go to Edit - Select All. Then copy/paste that log back here.

STEP 4 Post the following logs in this order
BitDefender
new HijackThis
new SilentRunners

My pc seems to be free of those annonying popups but will follow this latest request.
I do have a question. In performing the previous steps and reaching this one:
STEP 3

Navigate to the following folder - C:\Program Files

Delete the following folders if they exist:
HSN
ContextTools

--------
That went smoothly and deleted what you mentioned but I noticed there folders for Symantec and Norton Antivirus which I no longer use. Can I delete those?

I could not complete the ATF as I downloaded it fine and just followed the prompts which ran a scan and found 563 problems. I was not able to individually select "temporary files, cookies, temporary internet files, cookies, JAVA Cache" so assuming it did that in the scan. When they showed the number of problems in order to fix them or compact I was told to register and buy the new software or click on the trial version which I was unable to access when clicking on it.
So should I move onto step 3 anyway?

Ora,

Yes you can delete the folders for Symantec and Norton Antivirus. Regarding your issue with ATF cleaner, are you sure you dowloaded the correct utility. ATF cleaner does not show you errors or does not do any scans.

Try and download ATF cleaner again from here. (Your download will popup in a few seconds and you will need to SAVE the file your desktop. DO NOT CLICK THE DOWNLOAD NOW BUTTON. You may have clicked on Registry Mechanic download which is only an advertisment. If thats the case you will need to uninstall that software.)

Follow the instructions from the previous post and if you still cannot get it to work then go ahead and move to Step number 3 and then post your logs.

I had to install Active X control before BitDefender would run scan because I have sp2. Should I be concerned over the Active X control?

Ora,

No need to be worried about installing the Active-X control for the BitDefender scan, that is normal. I'm glad to report that your logs are clean at this time.

You can now delete any utilities that we have used during this process.

On behalf of staff here at CyberTechHelp I present this certificate for all your hard work.

Please read "How to Prevent Re-Infection" in my signature below and Happy Surfing.

I didn't do anything but follow instructions and....

pick your very intelligent gray matter apart.
I am grateful for your help and especially your patience.
I will read about preventing re-infection and hope just one, someday, I can be of help to someone else for a change..Ora
