Unhappy Windows Media player shuts down computer

Hi can anyone help. Every time I open windows media player (ver.11) it shuts down my computer. It then does a system scan and then windows restarts.
I dont have to play anything in WMP just open it.
I am using Windows XP.
Any help would be appreciated
thanks.

Uninstall WMP 11, reboot, run an antivirus scan, reboot, reinstall WMP 11.

You uninstalled the program from "Add/Remove Programs" then downloaded it from the web and reinstalled it and the exact same issue happens? When you say a scan starts, what program is doing the scanning? What type of Antivirus are you using?

Yes I used the add/remove program to uninstall it then went to internet to reinstall Version 11. It still does the same thing.
The computer shuts down, and restarts with a screen which is blue and says it is scanning the sytem for errors. Once this has finished it says no errors were found and windows then fires up.
I am using Kaspersky 2009 antivirus.

I will close this question now as I have not received any answers that would help so I am having my machine completely formatted. This seemed the only sensible option availalbe to me.

Sorry, have been busy. Well, that is usually the only surefire way to get it done. Its not a bad idea to format about once a year anyway just to clean things up.
