Internet running slower than it has-Browser freezes periodically-seems to hang

Hello,

I have windows xp on a AMD athalon computer. I am using internet Explorer.
Recently my computer has been running slow and freezing sometimes or hanging.
I already posted a Hijackthis script in 'Cyber Safety' the moderator said everything looked ok in my log.

He said I should post in this forum for additional help or suggestions.
Some please help me out?

It definitely is not running like it was. Sometimes my wife downloads free trial games..they are suppose to be safe and adware free-are they??

Please help me out!

still need the harddrive info. if almost full it can cause the problems you are having. One thing you can try is to use another browser and see if its still slow. Do not let that toolbar you are using install on it. There is also a possibility that the toolbar is whats causing your problem.

Hit <CTRL>+<ALT>+<DEL> and look at the task manager during those sluggish periods.

Look under the [Process] tab for something called "svchost.exe" (there may be several of them). See if one of them is peaking at 100% or there about?

If that's the case, one of Microsoft's May 2007 security patches was initially released with a flaw which would Peak CPU utilization at 100% for 20 minutes or so while it was trying to update.

Microsoft later patched that, but whether that patch was automatically pushed out or not... only Microsoft knows!

Thus if the above "svchost.exe" shows 100% CPU utilization during your sluggish time, then you need to re-install one of Microsoft's re-patched May 2007 patches.

hello,

Thanks for your information. I will have to check that at my next sluggish period. I will see what it is doing in processes then.

If so, is there a link to where I would get that patch or no?
Let me know...I am not up on all the patches and updates....

Thanks for your help..

I don't remember exactly which MS Patch it was...

I don't remember exactly which MS Patch it was, but due to the CPU utilization peaking at 100%, you will not be able to update the one file that will fix the problem because it will time out due to the 100% CPU utilization. (* ROFLOL *)

The remedy is to turn MS Auto-Update off temporarily. I don't remember whether you need to reboot your PC after that, but if you're not successful in continuing without rebooting... then reboot and retry again.

Once you've successfully turned Auto Update off (whether rebooted or not), then go in and perform a manual update. There should be only one MS patch not yet applied. Once you apply that and reboot, you should be able to turn your Auto-update back on again.
