unable to install MS works suite

I am trying to install ms work suites, it keeps telling me to close out internet explorer, and everytime I try to it won't close out. I run window XP, I went to control-alternate-delete and it doesn't show up, I went to processess and tried from there but it won't shut down. How can I get it to shut down. I disabled my anti virus software. I really want to install the word program.
