Monitor Problems

I have a Gateway computer, 1 1/2 years old - dual core, gig RAM, large hard drive, etc. My flat screen monitor which came with it stopped working about a month ago. I connected an older Gateway monitor to the computer and now it is making a cracking noise while the screen shrinks for a second. This happens several times a day.

Do you think my computer is messing up these monitors or is it just coincidence that the older monitor is acting up. I don't know whether I should buy a new monitor if my computer is going to keep messing them up. What do you think?
