Problem with Internet Connection

Hi, my Laptop lost its Wireless connection & despite trying everything within my knowledge & AoL help/support, I cannot get a connection. The Laptop runs Vista Home Premium.
The Laptop finds the Network, the signal is excellent & I can chat on Skype, but cannot get a connection either through IE 7 or Firefox??
I have re-configured the Wireless Router, re-set IE settings in Internet Options & every other conceivable option, but to no avail.
I would welcome any suggestions how to fix the problem, thanks.
Paul.

If you can chat on Skype which uses port 29015 by default, then you have a valid ip address and you are authenticating/communicating with the wireless router. The modem/router is not the issue. It sounds like you have inadvertently blocked port 80.

To test this, disable any firewall(s) that may be running, for example, Windows Firewall, Zone Alarm, Router Firewall... For most software firewalls there will be an icon in the notification area (lower right by the clock) that you can right click on and select disable, shut down or exit. If disabling all firewalls resolves the issue, you will need to configure the firewall to allow the tcp and udp protocols through port 80. If you need help, post back with what firewall(s) you are using.

Hi, thanks for replying, I have disabled Windows Firewall, but still cannot make a connection. I do not know how to enable Port 80. I would appreciate any advice on how to do that, cheers Paul

Have you reset the Winsock Catalog to default Paul? If not, give this a try please. To do this, click on the Start button and type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Copy and paste the below string after the prompt> and hit Enter.

netsh winsock reset

You will get a message saying "Sucessfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset."

If you still cannot browse, I would like to see some logs please. Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) from here to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Make sure dss.exe is on your desktop and open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click on the Start button and type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator". Copy and paste the below string after the prompt>.

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

When the DSS Configuration display opens click the "Check All" button. Uncheck "Temp Cleanup" and then click the "Scan!" button to start the scan.

Once the scan has completed a textbox will appear - copy/paste those contents back here (main.txt). Also a the second text file, extra.txt, will show as minimized in your Task Bar. Maximize/Open this, and copy/paste those contents back here along with the main.txt please. (The logs can also be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder). You may find that the maximum characters allowed is exceeded when you post. If so, halve the logs and make several posts.

In addition to what AnnMarie has asked you to do, It may also be worth to try configuring your DNS settings manually.

From what I have been able to find, AOL's DNS server address is 205.188.146.145 (I have only been able to find one?).

I verify that it is a DNS issue, you may wish to do some ping testing. In vista open the command prompt, by doing what AnnMarie has said:

Quote:
To do this, click on the Start button and type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Rightclick on it and choose "Run as Administrator".
In here, type:
Quote:
ping 202.72.148.215
What comes up...You should get "Reply from 202.72.148.215 etc etc....". If you DONT then the issue is not a DNS issue. If you do get a reply, continue with these steps:

Now type:
Quote:
ping www.aol.com
Quote:
ping www.google.com
What do you get for both of these? You should get "Reply from xx.xx.xx.xx..." If you do not get replies then follow these steps:

1. Click "Start" or "Vista Orb" (if you want to call it that)
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click "Classic View" (if you are not already in it)
4. Double Click "Network and Sharing Center"
5. Click "Manage Network Connections" on the left
6. Right Click "Wireless Network Connection"
7. Click "Properties"
8. Click "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)"
9. Click "Properties" underneath
10. About 2/3 of the way down you should see the DNS setting area. From here Click "Use the following DNS server addresses" and type the DNS server address I typed in above into the primary and click "OK" then Close

I hope this helps, obviously do what AnnMarie says first as he/she is the expert.

Hi Paul. There is software installed on this computer that is associated with the Zlob trojan and there is still a Norton service running although it appears this software has been uninstalled. I think we need to clean up this machine and then see where we stand.

Go to Programs and Features in Control Panel and uninstall ErrorSmart and My Web Search. Reboot and go here and run the online Norton Removal Utility. It should get rid of Norton traces.

Next download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here.

Doubleclick on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then click Finish. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan" then click Scan. The scan may take some time to finish so please be patient. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. Please copy and paste the entire report in your next reply.

Reboot one more time and run Deckards again and post both logs please.
