Question Hard Drive & Hard Disk

#1 Do hard drives & hard disks have the same amount of room. #2 How come computer's show less room when the package said, let's say 80GB "reffering to when its empty, nothing installed". #3 Can't install windows on it, but can be used as a large "floppy" ???

#1 They are available in many different sizes.
#2 Manufacturers say 1 gig is 1000mg. Whereas the computer measures it at 1024mg hence causing a discrepancy.
#3 Is that a message you've been getting????????????

I guess I was just curious, I'm advanced but along ways away from being a tech, actually I do have a problem with a 40GB Hard Drive, the hard drive is being seen as a 503MBHard Drive. A tech said the HDD would have to be formatted, but like a typical tech and/or salesman in big chain stores "Bestbuy Canada" didn't spill to many beans.

I was planing on installing WINME, might be less secure, but less annoying than 98 I'm talking hardware config. I found out to that Bill Gates Team was stupid enough to make it so you could put windows installation files in system, of course thats because your installing off the C: Drive.
Now Bill Gates Team Gets With The Program! "XP"

Is this a name brand puter, home built? 486, 586 Pentium. If it is only seeing a 503MB drive I suspect this is an older computer and the BIOS will not support large drives.

The hard drive does not have to be formatted for the BIOS to recognize the size of the drive.

ME In my Opinion, stay away from it, Win 98 is a better O/S if you have a choice, that's in my opinion.

It's called Performance Design, 33.2 Inches Tall, 16.8 Inches Sides Wide, 7.3 Front & Back Wide. It may have originally been used as a server. The heat sink & processor look like there built in together "not to the board", so I don't exactly know the processor. I also hooked the hard drive up as a second "NEW" hard drive (slave) as a test, on the computer I'm talking to you from. The computer I'm to talk to you from is a fairly new "HP" & still detected it as a 503MB. As for software I have at my disposal Windows 98/ME/ 95 Upgrade & before longhorn is released may also get a copy of XP Home Upgrade.
Sometimes this forum is as quiet as a village or as loud as a city. I hope I didn't scare people off.
