Unhappy Task Manager Wont Open "Being Used by Another Program": Moved from XP by Murray

Hi,

When ever i try to open the Task manager or Run "Reg Edit" it comes up with the error that "Another Program is Currently Using This..."

I have been looking around on the web and found a few things like it could be P2Pnetworking file which i managed to find and successfully remove! also there were 2 folders that kept appearing in Program Files\Common Files with names such as {12942 .....} i managed to finally remove these succesfully!

However the problem still persists! when i start my computer if i press ctrl+alt+dlt in the first 5 seconds the task manager will appear and every things fine however if i wait 5 seconds and try it appears with the message "that its being used"

After Scanning with BitDefender i found 125 infected files and 9 viruses!

It has deleted 131 files

However the ones it cant seem to delete are -

...Programs\Startup\taskmgr.exe which is infected with Backdoor.RBot.EOG

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{1... Infected with

Trojan.Downloader.Agent.AQQ

Any help would be appreciated thanks!!

I am running Windows XP Media Centre Edition

You'll need to post a HiJackThis log in the Cyber Safety forum. Here's a link on how-
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/...ad.php?t=86677
With all the malware that was on your computer I wouldn't really take anyone else's advice on this problem with the exception of those in the Cyber Safety forum.
EDIT: Murray moved this to Cyber Safety as I was typing.

Howdy TazK,

Welcome to CTH. Looks like part of what is surely some tough infection there, though you do say you have already removed a good bit. Let's take action now and see what else there is to do.

Open HijackThis, and choose None of the above, just start the program. Click Config – Misc Tools – Open process manager. From the list, click each of the following if it is present, and Kill Process. Close HijackThis.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\taskmgr.exe

Then Right click Here and download Kellys Korner's regtmcmdrestore.vbs to your desktop (Save Target/Link As). Then click on the downloaded file and allow it to complete.

Download combofix.exe.

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts. A window will open with a warning. Type "Y" (and Enter) to start the fix.
When the scan completes it will open a text window. Please save this log in case we need it later.

A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporaily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Close Internet Explorer and all running programs and run a scan in HijackThis. Place a check next to all of the following lines, then select “Fix Checked” and close HijackThis.

[B]R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [p2p networking] p2pnetworking.exe
[O4 - Global Startup: taskmgr.exe/B]

Go Here and download ATF cleaner. Click on the downloaded file to run it, and select "Select All", then click Empty Selected (and close ATF).

If you have them, also click on Firefox/Opera at the top and repeat the steps (and close ATF). Firefox/Opera will need to be closed first for the cleaning to be effective.

Download The Avenger from here to your Desktop and unzip it.

Copy all the text contained in the code box below by highlighting it and right clicking and selecting "Copy"

Code:
Files to delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\taskmgr.exe
Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop. Look under "Script file to execute" and click on "Input Script Manually". Next click on the Magnifying Glass icon and a blank dialogue box will open called "View/Edit script". Position your mouse inside the box, rightclick and choose Paste. All the text above in the code box should now appear there. Click Done and click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script. Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

The Avenger will restart your computer. (if the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)

When you have rebooted, a black command window briefly opens on your desktop, this is normal. A logfile will be created that records all actions that The Avenger performed. This log file is saved to C:\avenger.txt. The deleted files will be backed up and saved to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

=================================================

Once your computer has rebooted, Disable your antivirus program and go here and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Go to Edit - Select All. Then copy/paste that log back here.

Then again run ComboFix again, this time saving and posting that log back here, along with the BitDefender log, the avenger.txt log and a new HijackThis scan please.

Also Go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here. You can use separate posts here if needed.
