shortcuts icons look wrong

Hello I am looking for some help. On my computer all of my shortcut icons are there and they work but they all have a folder icon on top of them. It is the folder that is the same one as the "My Pictures" folder with the 2 little pictures on it. When I start up my computer all of my shortcut icons look right for about 1 second and then folder icons are put on top of them.

Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Hi beav, welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

It sounds like you have TweakUI or some similar application
running at startup. TweakUI has many functions and one of them
is to replace Windows default icons with an icon of your choosing.

Do you run TweakUI 2000 or a Desktop enhancement program?

I will try that and look for it. Sorry if I sould stupid but what is Tweak UI? I've never heard of that?

You should recheckmark those things you shut off in msconfig
startup.

The easiest way to rectify your problem is to change the shortcuts
one at a time.

Right-mouse over the shortcut icon you want to change
Properties
Shortcut
(tab)
Change Icon...(button)
select the icon you want to use.
If you don't see a selection of icons to choose from click on the
Browse...(button) and go to
c:\windows\system\shell32.dll

Do this for each shortcut icon.

yes, I have tried to change the icon like you said and then the folder was just set on top of the new icon. it changed the icon but there was still a folder over the new one.

what is interesting is that it is only on shortcuts and not icons that are not shortcuts such as internet explorer or outlook. Those icons are not shortcuts so they are fine.

Checking the version of IE will tell us where you stand as far
as versions of libraries and *.DLL(Dynamic Link Libraries) you have.

How to check your version of IE(Internet Explorer)
Open IE and in the menu
Help/About Internet Explorer
The first thing that is under the Internet Explorer logo is
Version:*.**.****.****

What version number are you showing there?

Your a couple of visits shy of a fully updated Internet Explorer.
Another odd thing is that IE version comes on a WindowsME CD.
~shrug~

It's actually updates for WindowsXX as well as Internet Explorer.
Microsoft just calls them IE updates now but they do include
WindowsXX updates as well.

We have to go to Microsoft and update a few things.

Open up IE. In the menu click on
Tools/Windows Update

You can also do this from the Start(button) on your desktop
Start(button)
Windows Update (it's at the very top of the menu.

This takes you to Microsoft. You can trust them. On the
web page that opens click on
PRODUCT UPDATES

You might be prompted to install something....say OK or YES to
the "trust" and follow instructions. Your version of Windows will
be analyzed and Microsoft will know exactly what you have and
what you don't have. S'matter of fact, it will give you a nice list of
things you don't have and those will be ready for downloading(getting).

First thing you want to do is to download any
Critical Updates And Service Packs that are showing.
It's the first category in the list because it's the most important.
The little box to the left will already be checked. A check means
I want to get this. Every time there are issues with bugs,
security problems, or any recently discovered Internet security
issues, Microsoft makes these critical updates available to
prevent any of these bad things happening to you.

Get the criticals, then go back after reboot and get IE(Internet Explorer)
5.5sp2 update.

NOTE;
Although IE 6.x is available for download (and it is free) I would suggest
holding back a couple of more months. IE 6.x has sure overcome some
bugs it has experienced, and Microsoft has done an excellent job at
bringing that browser up-2-speed, but I still have more stability confidence
in 5.5SP2 than 6.x at this time. I'm sure my opinion will change soon but
for now hold-the-phone at 5.5SP2.
END NOTE

Post back when your done and we'll get shell32.dll taken care of after
that.

the mods worked very hard to make this into what you see today.

Sorry, It's impossible for me to hate

The only difference between 98 and ME is one came after
the other. Things look a little different on WindowsME in
some areas but they are not alien to each other like
Windows2000 would be to the both of them.

So...what happened?
