Toshiba laptop slower than 1995 Mac 145B Powerbook

Friends: My Toshiba Satellite M20 laptop (1300MHz, 1.29 GHz. XP Pro) runs like thick kethcup compared to my 400MHz, Pentium 2 Windows 98 box. I've read threads, followed the advice on disabling startups, etc., but to little avail.

Now I'm beginning to think I made an error when I first fired this puppy up because I see my company name as well as my personal name indicated as users. Also, when I check "processes," even with no applications open in the task bar, I find 54 processes running:
19 System
1 Local Network
1 Network
33 My company name.
Somewhere I think I read there should be only about 35 processes running at any point in time. Any clues please? (Thank you)

Ah fuzzee I found the post that did not have an answer. I'm not sure I understand the question, but I have a Toshiba Satellite and I will never have one again. They are clunky to haul around and their support stinks. I will try to answer your question if you could restate it for me. And if I can't answer it, at least it will be back at the top of the board for others to look again

Melodi: When I open the Windows Security Panel the logon information reads: "Company is logged on as FUZZEE\MyCompany'sName," and the time I booted up this morning.

Since I am the only one who has ever used this laptop, I obviously filled in some fields when with my name and my company's name when I initialized everything. However, I'm showing up twice and my company's name shows up twice for a total of four separate users. So, I wonder if that fact is related to the fact that my computer runs as slow as it does; and I wonder if that fact is also related to the fact that my company name is identified with 33 processes running when only 19 are identified "System?"

In other words, and this is a new question, if I turn on my computer and immediately go to check how many processes are running, shouldn't I see only System processes?

Sorry about the Toshiba This is my third one since '98, and up untill this issue - which I think is my fault - I have been pretty satisfied. Take care, and thanks for finding me and following up.

Well I wish I could help more, but I'm stumped on this. Not only that, I'm outta town and right now am using an internet cafe type place at Summerfest to log on. So when I return home, I'll read the question more carefully or maybe someone else will read it too and have an answer for you.

ok. what OS are you using? win2k or winxp? I don't think having 4 profiles would slow you down, having 33 processes running might slow you down. I have 24 processes running and I'm not running slow. Processes run according to what is checked in the windows start up. you can delete all but one profile and we can stop what starts up in the processes, thus freeing up more resources. I hope this is what you wanted to know. I also asked another person to look at your post.

First please get Spybot S&D to clear out most of the spyware.

Short tutorial and download link here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=mirrors

Fix everything SpybotSD labels in red.
Create a folder on your hard drive somewhere like in "My Documents" and name it Hijackthis
Download 'Hijack This to its own folder http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/c.bennett03/HijackThis.exe
Doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log, load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

After scanning with Spybot S & D and HijackThis, scan with a virus remover, such as McAfee, Norton, Pandaware, etc. Post back your results.

Fuzzee's HJ This log

Notes on what I see:
- I thought I had effectively disable everything with Kodak Easyshare. I stopped using this laptop for camera support four-five months ago.
- I have gone out of my way to evade Yahoo-anything, yet it shows up.

While I didn't check this forum thread until mid-afternoon (PST), I have lost the entire day because of this problem, whatever it is. Starting with this morning, Outlook took about 4 minutes to open up. IE browser took at least a minute to open, etc. What I did next was invest about 90 minutes copying all of my critical documents to CD's in case something catastrophic happens. Then I ran the virus scan at www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx, which I learned about from another thread; then I ran Spybot SD which returned about 50+ problems - almost if not of them Engage; then I ran AdAware which uncovered no problems; then I ran HJ This. Thanks for taking a look at what is below./Fuzzee

Then due to multiple explorer entries and ctfmon entries I would like you to run a system wide scan
here and set it to auto clean..

Food For Thought

I've discovered in Documents and Settings that I have the following identified users:

1. Administrator 1.8 GB 04/04 Creation Date
2. All Users 88.7 MB 04/04
3. Default User 7.0 MB 04/04
4. MyCompanyName 44.0 MB 10/22/03
5. MyCompanyName/MyName 3.0GB 10/29/03

As mentioned in another thread start, I'm the only person who has ever used this laptop. While I did buy it sometime in October, which would explain those dates, I'm clueless about the April events.

I only need one user account on this machine. It will never be shared.

Ok well first, we need the administrator account and you also need your own account.

Click / start / control panel / user accounts /
Click "Change an account"
Then click on any of the accounts to delete and delete those you wish to..

Then go to start / run / msinfo32
expand software
Click "startup groups"
Edit---Select all
edit---copy

Then paste that info here please.

[QUOTE=Mobo]Ok well first, we need the administrator account and you also need your own account.

Click / start / control panel / user accounts /
Click "Change an account"
Then click on any of the accounts to delete and delete those you wish to..
QUOTE]

When I choose 'Change an account' only three are indicated:
1. Company/Computer administrator
2. Guest/Guest account is off
3. ASP.NET Machine A.../Limited account Password protected.

The other user accounts I mentioned are visible in C:\Documents and Settings; not in start/cp/ua/change an account.....
