Startup is Taking Forever

When I start up my machine. He comes up to the logon screen fairly quickly. After I logon, it takes an extremely long time before it gets to my desktop. It may take 5 minutes or so. What can I do to lessen that time? It used to take no more than a minute.

Thanks!
Diane

There are several things we can do.

1. clean up the desktop, if it is covered with icon short cuts delete some of them (DO NOT DELETE RECYCLE BIN)

2. Run disk clean up, click start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk clean up. Also if you haven't in a while run, defrag after disk clean up is finished

3. Run virus and spyware scans

4. And finally, click start, run, type msconfig, start up tab, post back all the names of the start up items These are programs that are always running in the background and can cause the computer to become slow. Some of these are not neccisary to have running all the time. (note: you will not be able to copy and paste)

One of the coolest programs I found through here is bootvis. I am running xp x64 and had the same exact programs. Do a google for it and you will be in fast boot heaven

Here's a link to the site, so that you can find out what all those names mean, if you like.

http://www.processlibrary.com/
Leave check:
HDAudPropShortcut
Hkcmd
HPBootOp
CTHELPER
ccApp
jusched
TASKBAR
Ctfmon
QuicKeys Engine
SpySubtract

Go back into msconfig, go to the start up tab, go through the list and only leave the above checked. Click apply, okay, restart the computer. A message will come up once it reloads winodws, Just place a check mark in the white box and hit okay.
This will not delete anything, your messangers and everything are still there. You'll just have to go to your start menue to open them up.

You asked if bootvis works well. I had the problem where Windows XP Pro X64 would randomly take up to 5 min to boot from startup to login screen (that little scrolling bar) I ran bootvis and at the longest it takes 5 sec now.

I found the link for you

It isn't working any better. Still is taking at least 2 1/2 minutes after it gets to the login screen.

Any other ideas?

Thanks much!
Diane

And the myth about Bootvis continues........

It's not a tool for users but for software developers and PC system designers.

Are you the only user to the computer, or are there more? If your the only one, you can set your computer up, so that once it loads up the welcome screen it will go straight to your desktop.

Yes, I'm the only user. How can I set it up so it will go straight to my desktop. I changed from the login screen to the welcome screen setup and that didn't change the time any, so I changed back to the login screen. Is there a better way to get it to go straight to the desktop. After the Login or the Welcome screen, it still stops running for several seconds to a minute before proceeding. Takes about 2 1/2 from either Login or Welcome to get to my desktop.

Thanks!

Still Having The Slow Startup

Any other clues about why I'm having this extremely low startup?

Thank you!

Check and see if its time to defrag your hard drive. And check you temp internet files and manually delete them. Scan for spyware. I like Spybot and Adware. You can find them at www.download.com
