Vista Ate My Disk Space?
So I get up this morning at around seven and check some things on the computer. Everything is running like normal so I get up and go on with my daily routine. I return to my computer at around three and notice everything is running terribly. Vista alerts me that I have low disk space, 68mb to be exact.
I reboot and that 68mb is upped to 2gb. I do a disk cleanup and it ups to about 3gb. I am baffled by this, as I had a little over 100gb of free space just this morning, with no one touching my computer since. I began looking for a folder that's packed with 100gb of data, but notice that even when I check the properties of every folder and file in my C:\ drive, it still only adds up to around 97gb. I deleted all of my extra restore points and that still takes me to only around 20gb. Where did all my disk space go? Specs: 228gb hard drive Windows Vista 2.5gb ram Intel Pentium D @ 3.0GHz (dual core) |

Hi JPelle. Schedule a full chkdsk. It will verify your free space as part of the check. To do this, open My Computer, rightclick on C: and choose Properties. Click on Tools > Error Checking > Check Now. A Dialogue Box will open. Check "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and OK. You will be advised that a check cannot be run as some files are in use, do you want to schedule a check at your next reboot. Click Yes and reboot. The check will take quite a while so grab a coffee and a book.
Let us know if this helped. |

Thanks for the advice, though I ran it twice and it didn't seem to be any help.
Any more ideas? |

Can you post the log JPelle. I might see something that could help. To do this. hit the Windows key plus r and type:
eventvwr.msc and ok. Click on Windows Logs > Application and look for wininit. Doubleclick to open and copy and paste the log in this thread. |

No that's ok. Chkdsk is reporting 208GB of disk space occupied by files. As this happened just a couple of days ago, it's possible that a reporting utility may help us.
Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) from here to your Desktop. Close all open applications and windows, doubleclick on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts. When the scan is complete, a text file will open. Copy and paste the contents of this log (Main.txt) in your next reply. Also post the contents of Extra.txt (it should be minimised on your taskbar but if not, it can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder). You may find that the maximum characters allowed is exceeded when you post. If so, halve the logs and make several posts. |

Yep, a shutdown and reboot can work miracles.
