Corrupt files, wont back up, etc
I am having one problem after another. I have tried to back up my computer for awhile now and it wont let me. I have updates that keep saying I need to update but my computer wont update them. I have files that won't open due to missing link? or info? I cant click on task scheduler bc I get a warning that says, the task image is corrupt or has been tampered with.197d7000.
I have a hijackthis log and my sytem is the following Gateway GT5622 Genuine (r) cpu 2160 @ 1.8GHz 1.8GHz 3.0GB 32 bit Windows Vista Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 2:07:19 AM, on 12/19/2007 Platform: Windows Vista (WinNT 6.00.1904) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16575) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\Windows\system32\Dwm.exe C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE C:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\MPS\mpsevh.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\WINDOWS\RtHDVCpl.exe C:\Program Files\Spare Backup\SpareBackup.exe C:\Program Files\BigFix\bigfix.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\MSK\mskagent.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxpers.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Search Protection\SearchProtection.exe C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe C:\Program Files\NETGEAR\WG111v2\WG111v2.exe C:\Windows\ehome\ehmsas.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe C:\Program Files\SiteAdvisor\6253\SiteAdv.exe C:\Windows\system32\igfxsrvc.exe C:\Windows\system32\taskeng.exe C:\Program Files\MumboJumbo\Inspector Parker Mystery Bundle\Inspector Parker\Parker.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe C:\Windows\system32\SearchFilterHost.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/...ch/search.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.gateway.com/g/startpage.h...s=DTP&M=GT5622 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/...ch/search.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.gateway.com/g/startpage.h...s=DTP&M=GT5622 R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.gateway.com/g/sidepanel.h...s=DTP&M=GT5622 R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/.../www.yahoo.com R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName = R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! I see you have posted a Hijack This log which shows evidence of previous malware infection. Do you have reason to believe that you computer might still be infected pepita_red? If so, please post a new topic in our Malware Removal Forum and someone will assist you.
If not, please post more information. How long have you had this problem? What error messages do you get from Windows Update? What files are missing? |

I have ran several scans and all say they are clear. I am using McAfee but I am not sure if it is not catching something, I am probably the least knowledgeable as far as computers go. I have been trying to open up a lot of attachments from my college professors and I dont have the right stuff to open them and everyone keeps telling me that any computer should have this stuff, so that is what got me started looking further into the computer. the following are my updates, I keep trying to update them and I come to see they have not been updated.
Security updates for microsoft.net framework 1.1 sp1 on windows X security update for windows vista security update for windows vista (again) update for windows junk mail filter windows malicious software removal tool security update for windows microsoft 8 |

I need more information. How long have you had this problem? What error messages do you get from Windows Update when the updates fail?
Regarding the attachments, what file types are they? |

This problem has been going on for over 6 months that I remember.
I don't get error messages re: updates, All that happens is I click yes to update and restart my computer and once it comes back on, the updates are still there asking me to update and restart. The attachments are: application/x-unknown (488 KB), which noone in the class has a problem opening but me. |

See here for your Windows Update issue.
Regarding the attachments, that information doesnt help me I'm afraid. I need to know the file type of the attachment you are trying to open (e.g. .pdf, doc, docx, etc). Can you ask the sender and let me know please. |

ok, the updates were fixed, thanks so much. The files are all supposed to be PDF, there are 10 and half will not open and half will. The ones that do not open all give me the same ending, unknown

ok, I was reading a site re: pdf's I downloaded "fox-it" and it now opens as a PDF file. So, I guess that solves that. As far as the malware, you said you saw some in the hijackthis, should I go over to the malicious forum now?

No, there is no need. What I saw was remnants of a previous infection and as you have run several scans, we have no reason to believe your operating system is still infected. We can get rid of the remnants here.
Download the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here (click on Download Now). Doubleclick on mbam-setup.version.exe to install the application. Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware then click Finish. If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan" then click Scan. The scan may take some time to finish so please be patient. When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When disinfection is completed, a log will open and you may be prompted to Restart. Please do so. The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. Please copy and paste the entire report in your next reply. |

Ok, well that scan coupled with your other scans pretty much dismiss the problem being caused by malware.
Windows Updates issues can be difficult to pin down so the best idea is to go straight to the experts and take advantage of the free support that Microsoft offers for Windows Update issues. You can lodge a free Windows Update support incident request here. |
