External Drive Write Protected?

I am running Windows XP (I know it's old and out of support). I have an external drive I have been using for the past few days for saving files I wanted to remove from my hard drive. I just started getting errors saying the device was write protected and to remove the protection.

I didn't even know it was possible to write protect the drive. (A Western Digital.) I can copy files from the external to my hard drive, so I can access the drive and see my files. But I can no longer write to the drive. There is still a ton of available space. Almost 1 TB.

Anyone know if this is a hardware or software issue? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
