Cannot defrag

I cannot do my regular defrag. I click "defragment now" and when Windows administrator checks I click "continue" as usual but nothing else happens.
I am using Windows Vista (basic) 32 bit. Any help would be appreciated.

Check if the Disk Defragmenter service is running.
a. Click Start and type services.msc in the search box.
b. On the Services window, look for Disk Defragmenter service and Click OK.
c. Check if the status of the Disk Defragmenter service is set to Automatic.

If it is, then a program running in the background could be causing it, try this troubleshooter;

Cannot defrag

Hello Murf
Thank you for your prompt reply. I have opened *Services* window and gone through alphabetical list but *Disk Defragmenter service* is not there.

Start | Administrative Tools

Click on Services

Once the Services Console has opened, scroll down and double click the Task Scheduler to open the dialog box

In the General TAB make sure the Startup type is set to Automatic and in the Services status, slick the Start button and press OK

Now see if it works.

If not;

Start search type in cmd, right click on result to Run as Administrator

Type in

sfc /scannow hit enter (space after sfc, before /)
