Win98 Performance tip
To minimise the swap file size and wastage in Win98, follow these instructions;
Click on Start then Run then type in Sysedit and hit enter... go to the Windows/System.ini window, scroll down to [386enh] add or edit this line to read: ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 Click on the File menu and save and exit now reboot. Thats it. Things to note: Win95 already has this enabled. If you have less than 64MB of ram it is debateable how much of an effect this will have on your system. What it does is let Windows use your system ram instead of having to store stuff on your hard drive. Some people have reported crashing on shut down however nearly everyone who used it loves it. If you run into a problem you can run Sysedit again and remove/reset(back to it's previous value) the line. I have used it and I think it helps make windows a bit nippier...try it and see. ------------------ Don't make me use uppercase... |

Yea that's a great tip. It worked excellently for me when I was using Win98.
96MB+ would be preferable for effective use though IMHO MiShY ------------------ Cyber Tech Help You Break 'em - We Fix 'em |

Hi all, Sorry to resurrect this thread but have been away and in catching up came across Tehnohead's tip and the ringing endorsements by tramtwo and Mishy Having Win98 and 128MB I am very interested in giving it a shot. However, when I went to 386[ENH]in System.ini I found no swapfile entry so would need to add the whole command line. Consequently, would I be right in assuming that any swapfile entry which might appear in 386 would be there as the result of user action and not by default? |

Hi Alwill...the PagingDrive= line in system.ini designates the location of your swapfile.
Just adding the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 line under the [386enh] heading will allow you to check it's effectiveness on your system. |

Just to clarify the second part of your post, the partition/drive that the PagingDrive= line points to will be C: by default. If you set your own swapfile on, say, D:, Windows automatically changes the system.ini line.

Hi HKEd,
Thanks very much for your responses which have clarified the matter for me. I must admit I am nervous and wary of making changes in areas where my knowledge is limited but I feel confident enough now to go ahead and insert the line; as has been explained, it can always be deleted if glitches occur [This message has been edited by Alwill (edited 08 November 2000).] |
