I think I have a virus or something: Moved by Murray from OD !!

I do not know what is going on with my computer. Maybe someone can help me. All the sudden I get this window that says your computer is infected. Then I notice I have a new icon on my desktop that I did not put there. It is a spywear remover program. So I click on it and it does its thing and tells me that I have all these trogens and stuff. And then it tells me that it can not remove them from my computer. But if I was to purchase this softwear from them then it could. Hmmmm, . So I do a uninstall but it takes like one second and says done. I do not believe it is really gone that fast. But anyways now my computer is like super slow. I can not change my background from that stupid your computer is infected suff they put on there. I can not do a system restore either. It will only let me go back as far as the time it happened. Hmmmm . I have tryed to download all these spywear remover programs and the way my computer is running that takes a while. And after i download it and install it it always tells me now you must register or activate for some amount of $ before I can use it. . Every time geeeeeez. I refuse to pay to get rid of something I didnt ask for in the first place. There has to be another way. This has to be illigal I think. I mean is it legal to be putting this junk on peoples computers and messing up there machines? Anyways if anyone knows what I am dealing with and knows what I may do to fix it I would appreciate the advice. Thank you

Hello suspect, welcome to CTH

Please download HijackThis from here. Click on the downloaded file to run it and select "Do a system scan and save a logfile". Use copy/paste and post the log it creates back here for review.

Don't fix anything with HijackThis, someone will review it and respond to provide further guidance.

Also go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here.

Howdy suspect,

Not Hindu, Greek. CTH is a global forum, so we come from many different backgrounds here.

The issues you mention are well known signs of infection, but the logs you post don't reflect what is normally seen along with such infection. In fact, no startup items show here at all. Have you disabled them in some manner? Post back on that, and do the following scan for now.

Go here for an online AV scan (requires IE to run).

Scan "Local Disks" and when finished save the scan log and then post the log here.

Hi Tom. Well I do not know if I disabled them or not. I did type msconfig and tried to stop some stuff from running by unchecking all the boxes in my start up. But I am not so computer smart. But that is the only thing I can think of why it was not showing up in my startup. I will do that scan you told me to do and post it back in here. Thanks

Best you open msconfig and under the Startup tab recheck (enable) all items. then Apply/OK and allow the reboot. Only this way can we get an assessment on what is there and what to remove. Instead of the scan (which you may have done already), enable the startups, then post back a new HijackThis. Also a new Silent Runners log.

Items of infection showing, but not su much disabled through msconfig as I had thought. I am not familiar with this company or this particular software - Nitro5x. What does it do there? Please post back on that, and do the following.

Go to Start – Settings – Control Panel. Click on Add/Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on Remove. Then close the Control Panel.

C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe

Then Close Internet Explorer and all open windows and run a scan in HijackThis. Place a check next to all of the following lines, then select “Fix Checked” and close HijackThis.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {D1F9062E-BC0B-F499-3ADA-F47FAD7BD216} - C:\WINDOWS\butgf1.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows update loader] C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe

Go Here and download ATF cleaner. Click on the downloaded file to run it, and select "Select All", then click Empty Selected (and close ATF).

If you have them, also click on Firefox/Opera at the top and repeat the steps (and close ATF). Firefox/Opera will need to be closed first for the cleaning to be effective.

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite from here and install it.

After installation, double-click the icon on your Desktop to launch Ewido.

On the top of the main screen click Shield. Then click the word active to change it to inactive.

You will need to also update Ewido to the latest definition files. On the top of the main screen click Update. Then click on Start Update. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. If you have problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Now close Ewido (don't scan just yet).

Download Pocket Killbox from http://www.cybertechhelp.com/downloa...pocket-killbox. Paste the full file path hilighted below in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot.

C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually. If Killbox gives you a PendingFile rename operations, manually reboot at this point.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the reboot, reboot again into Safe Mode (at startup tap the F8 key and select Safe Mode).

Make sure all windows are closed and run Ewido. Click Scanner, then click on the Scan tab. Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning. When the scan is complete click Recommended Action and change it to Quarantine. Then click Apply all actions.

Once the scan has finished, click the Save report button, then click Save Report As. This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then reboot back to Normal Mode.

Now to undo the negative changes infection makes. This fix is only for XP & Windows 2000

Download and Save Cleandesktop to your computer from this link: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/cleandesktop.exe and double click on the cleandesktop.exe

It will automatically extract to c:\desktopclean where it needs to be to run and will automatically run the cleandesktop.vbs script

If it doesn't open then go to c:\desktopclean and double click on the cleandesktop.vbs Do not run any other file from there please unless asked to

If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run. It is not malicious.

If you get a message when you first run it "Can not find script file "blah blah blah" then don't worry just doubleclick the cleandesktop.vbs script again you sometimes get that message when a script blocker blocks the script

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your normal desktop and context menu functions.

It will restart Explorer.

Once you have performed the big cleanup, each of the other Users on the System needs to be signed in to clean up their desktop and regain the right click.

I have included another vbs to do this. It is named Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Have each User sign in and run Other Profiles Regfix.vbs
Open C:\ (Go to Start>Run and type C: Press enter) and Open the c:\desktopclean folder. Double click on Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Explorer will be ended and that user's active desktop registry entries will be repaired. Explorer will be restarted.

To restore the desktop to whatever picture you normally have right click on a blank part of desktop & select properties/desktop & select your prefered picture press apply & then ok to exit and then press F5

You will need to do this step for every user account.

(Fix and script by Mosaic1)

After the desktop repair, please post back here the Ewido log, along with a new HijackThis and Silent Runners please.
