Angry "USB Device Not Recognized"

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 notebook running Windows Vista Home Premium with 3 external USB ports and whenever I plug any USB device (so far I have tried 2 USB memory sticks, 2 wireless logitech mice and a maxtor external hard drive) I receive the above message.

In device manager (when my mouse and webcam are plugged in) I see the following:

Unknown Device
Unknown Device
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

Once double clicked on "Unknown Device" it states: "No drivers are installed for this device." Yet even when I point it to the C:/Windows/system32 folder it still states the same message and is unable to find a driver.

Any advice on what to do would be much appreciated, as it really is quite annoying.

Thanks

Danny

Welcome to CTH

Vista drivers are in a different folder

Right click on the "Unknown" ones and uninstall them.

Reboot and VISTA should find the right drivers. If not update driver and point to:

C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository

Hey Murf,

Thanks for the advice, but I have gone through the same process 3-4 times now and I am still having the same problem.

If I am unable to come to some solution within the next few days, do you think a clean install should fix the problem?

Thanks.

Done a little reading on that notebook and folks have had the same problem with USB Vista drivers, to the point of sending back to Acer or having to completely reinstall the operating system. Did this just start? Was it working before?

I have only had Vista for 2 weeks now after using my upgrade disc sent from Acer many months ago, and I think the USB ports worked for around 2 days and then suddenly stopped.
