Win95/98 emulator?

Hi there,
I'm trying to get an old game to run. It specifically says in the manual that it only works with win95/98 or MS-Dos but not with ME/NT4/2000/XP.

The problem is that I can't even install the game. First I'm told that "This system does not support fullscreen mode", then my pc tells me that it coudn't open c:\xtpath.mss (what kind of file is an .mss?) and before the whole thing breaks down completely, it says that "the system cannot open COM3 port requested by the application".

I already tried using the DOS-Box but it didn't work. I'd try to install win98 on one part of my HD, only i don't have any win98 discs...i couldn't find any patches either....

Any suggestions?

I see. Well I'll transfer your topic to our Gaming forum. Perhaps one of the gamers will have a suggestion for you that might help.

Hi Dotty. What game is it?
What exactly happened when you attempted to use DOS-Box?

it's called "Herrscher der Meere", an old german strategy game...

i think I'll just give you a screenshot of the DOS-Box window... I'M pretty sure I must have done something wrong...dunno... I used this tutorial ...

And no, I tried neither VMWare nor Virtual PC, but I will do that right away

-scratches head- okay, if I understand that correctly, i'd need a disc to install win98 on the virtual drive now...i don't have one so that doesn't get me any further...

dotty, I pointed out in my prior post that The Dude's advice would be useless because you had already stated you did not have Win 9x installation media/licence.

That DOSBox screenshot indicates you have a valid DOSBox install but are trying to install the Win9x version of the game, not the DOS version. Potentially there are other setup files on the game CD (a common practice in that vintage of game). If you type DIR [ENTER] at the DOS prompt it will list the files.
If nothing obvious appears to you, post another screenshot and we'll see if we can spot it.

-rolls eyes at self- okay, I'm an idiot. I got the DOS-installation file to run but I can't pick a drive to save it to....I give up. My brother said he'd see if he can find a win98 version somewhere and mail it to me....thanks for your help, anyway!

Hmmm, DOSBox hasn't assigned any system drive letter, only mounting your CDrom as E.
Take a look at your DOSBox.conf file (should be on your start menu under DOSBox)
Right at the end of the file there is an Autoexec section like this one of mine...
Code:
[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount c: d:\
mount d: e:\
mount e: c:\
mount f: d:\
c:
"mount c:" command tells DOS where it's virtual C: drive is (in my example, I am using my actual d:\ drive for DOSBox's C: = long story )

We can probably play around with that and make sure it's not using Z which the game probably can't see.

hi,

I got the same problem i think. In my DOSBOX 0.72 i wrote:

mount d e:\hdm -t cdrom
mount e e:\spiele\ -freesize 1024
d:\hdm2011
dosinst.exe

then the installation starts, i choose the version (max installation 110mb), after this i choose the path and click on "OK"
after clicking ok an error tell me "System Error!: File "C:\XTPATH.MSS" - Status 3 - path not found!"

The game is called "herrscher der meere"

Where can i download the correct file? "xtpath.mss"

EDIT: i dont konw why, but know i can install the game! but if i want to start it -> "please insert the hdm-CD"

Hi and welcome eMieScHi.
Any reason you would be mounting a folder on the CD rom as the CD-Rom drive?
Sounds like the software is complaining because it's not being mounted in the root of the drive.
Perhaps the ORIGINAL CD-Rom may work better?
