Hi,
I know this topic is old, but I figure it might help other people who's googling this. I had this problem for a long time, basically tried "everything" but then I found out the problem was the sound card. Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer. Possible update of driver will work, I just changed it as I had another one lying around.

You know what, I had the same problem and it pissed me off so much. (built my own computer, freeze when playing games rarly happens when not playing a game. when it freezes, the speaker sounds horrible.. etc) but since I upgraded my BIOS to the newest release, everything is fixed, so you might wanna try that, dont know if it works for you, but it works for me and sounds like we had the same problem.
