Cannot connect to my Virgin broadband (moved from Vista)
I am unable to connect to my new Virgin Media broadband service. I can clearly see the network, but it is only giving me local access.
I did not have a problem connecting to our previous BT Home Hub and nor do I have any issues connecting to next doors Sky broadband (with their permission of course!) In addition I have connected my work laptop and also my Blackberry, so I don't think there is anything wrong with the Virgin Media Home Hub. I therefore believe I need to reset my IP address. I have spent over two hours with the Virgin Media guys and they cannot help me. I am on vista and not that tech savy! Help someone |

How can I reset my IP address on VISTA platform?
How can I reset my IP address on VISTA to connect with my wireless Virgin Media SuperHub? Help please, I'm not a techie but understand a little bit and can follow instructions - but have tried all the usual through 'Command Prompt' - renew, release, reset but the IP will still not reset. The laptop IP is still showing 169... but below is what shows in the 'Wireless Network Connection Details'.......
Connection-specific DNS Suffix: Description: Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter Physical Address: 00-1F-3A-B4-E7-BB DHCP Enabled: Yes IPv4 IP Address: 192.168.0.2 IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Lease Obtained: 14 February 2011 18:26:42 Lease Expires: 14 February 2011 19:26:41 IPv4 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 IPv4 DHCP Server: 192.168.0.1 IPv4 DNS Servers: 194.168.4.100, 194.168.8.100 IPv4 WINS Server: NetBIOS over Tcpip Enabled: Yes Link-local IPv6 Address: fe80::7d7d:c9a5:d033:569d%10 IPv6 Default Gateway: IPv6 DNS Server: Help please please.... |

That info looks fine. What is it that you cannot do and what errors do you get?

The laptop is not connecting to the router to access the internet. The Ip on the laptop keeps showing 169..... even though have tried command prompt /release /renew /reset. The laptop doesn't seem to be able to reset to the correct IP for the Virgin Media Superhub. No idea how else to overide / change / reset the IP to connect properly??? As you can see from the Wireless Network Connection Details, we can see the IP we need but we can't get the laptop to connect to it! I realise there is probably a setting somewhere that needs changing but where??? I hope there is some way we can get this sorted as I am now tempted to throw the laptop through the window!

I see the ip address that the wireless is getting and it looks good.
Where do you see the 169 IP address? Are we talking about 2 different machines? Or are we talking about ethernet and wireless? I assumed that the ipconfig info you provided was for the connection that you are having problems with. I am starting to think that is not the case. |

When I try to reconfigure the IP address in the Command Prompt window, it keeps showing an IP address begining with 169. We can't seem to reset this but we are not techies so maybe we are missing or not doing something properly to reset/overide the bad 169 IP? |

Why the two different ipconfig outputs for the same connection? What did you do between the ipconfig runs? ARe you connecting to different networks? It looks that way. Which one is yours? |

Solution finally found and implemented. So for anyone else out there that may have a similar issue, here is the solution that worked for us....
Basically the Atheros network card need to be updated as the versiion was out of date and couldn't recognise the WPA2 security! This was a simple case of updating the windows software over the internet. Yes you need to be able to take your laptop somewhere where is can connect to the internet or get VirginMedia to guide you through the setup of a 'Guest' within the router, as this is a wrok around until you can update the network driver. Hooray - weare now up and running again on the internet! |
