I have a bad SATA hard drive. I am replacing the hard drive with a new 500gig.

I woke up the other morning to an error message on my HP. Went through all of my different options to fix it and found out that my hard drive is going bad. I can't get it to boot up to windows xp even in safe mode. I went out and purchased a new 500 Gig SATA internal hard drive and am going to load windows onto it. However, I don't want to lose the info on my old drive if there's even a chance in accessing it. I have changed out old ATA hard drives before and made the new one the master and old one the slave just to get the info off of it...But I've never done this with 2 SATA drives and have no clue what to do. How am I suppose to hook up the bad SATA drive as a slave? And how does it inturn hook up to my new hard drive? Please help!!!
