Ethernet lights ?...

On a compac laptop where u connect the ethernet cable the yellow and green lights are on steady and there is no internet coming in (shows as cable is unplugged) but on the device manager no errors r showing. Compaq Pressario V2000.

Any Idea what the lights mean?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Is the cable going from the computer hooked to a router? Try resetting the router if there is one, if not, check your cable is good.

This is actually my Nephew's laptop and the problem started at his dorm and when I try to plug it into my DSL w/o the router thers no change. The 2 lights r on steady on the ethernet plug and it appears as there's no connection happening at all.

He believes that the problem started after a power surge but he can't confirm that it did not work after that. (Kids lol)

thanks in advance

If it happened after a power surge, it's quite possible the power surge killed the onboard LAN. The only solution for this problem is a PCMCIA Ethernet card.

You can't replace the one on the motherboard, you'd have to buy a PCMCIA card. These fit into a slot on the side of the laptop.

I edited my post but I see you didn't see that part I removed. But I need more than just the v2000, is there more numbers on the bottom of this laptop? Compaq shows a rather large list for the V2000.

Yes, that is the one I looked at also. But there are other numbers there and I wasn't sure if this one was like the one you have. Since it is the right numbers, I'll go back and see what else I can find out about this particular laptop, as in what type of PCMCIA cards you can use in that computer.

Are there any slots on the side of this computer? I can find no info at all on this option at HP. The only thing it states is this has bluetooth capabilities, and wireless internet.

If the slot is there you would use something like the product in the link below:

Looking at the ethernet's plug the area around looks kinda bent as if some 1 nailed it with something or it was dropped. Hopefully this card will save him ALOT of money but if it doesnt work then good for him cuz no 1 should be beating on computers lol.

I hope it wasn't dropped. And no, hammers don't make a computer work better.

The plastic piece is to keep dust and dirt from entering the computer. Also if he buys this PCMCIA card, make sure you tell I said, don't leave it in there all the time. They break very easily if knocked around while he's moving the laptop from place to place.
