Task Manager-uneccessary programs?

Question: when I go into task manager, lately, instead of the normal two or three programs that I am running, it shows about 20-30 programs. Should I change it back to how it was before, and if so, how, or should I leave it like this? A lot of it are programs that I don't really understand, but they look like they are taking up a ton of memory, quite a few of time taking about 950 or 9500 or something kb of memory. Is it possible to close some of that stuff out, and if so, how do I keep it that way?

Hi donstinson - if you would like us to check your startups for malware or spyware, Go here and download the latest version of Hijack This and run a scan. This. Most of the files listed will be harmless and/or required so do not make any changes, just click on Save Log, copy it and post it back in this thread.

Hi donstinson - you have a couple of nasty ActiveX Controls on board. Close all open browser windows and run Hijack This again. This time, select the below entries and click on Fix Selected. Reboot afterwards.

For more help deciding whether or not a startup can be safely disabled, have a look here. The safest way to do this is to to go Start > Run and type:

msconfig

then OK. Click on the Startup Tab and uncheck any unwanted entries. Reboot afterwards. If you later decide that you wish to re-enable a startup, just run msconfig again and recheck the entries.

Are you referring to these?

If so, run Hijack This as described in my earlier post and get rid of them.

If you mean the link to Pacmans Startup List, when you run msconfig and click on your Startup Tab, you will see a number of programs with checks next to them. If you want to trim back your startups, check those against the startups in Pacmans list and see if they are required. If not, use msconfig to disable them. It might be a good idea if you read this page first though.
