Wireless PC to a cabled PC

Hello

How would I connect a wireless PC tower (Win 7) to a PC tower (Win XP Pro) that connects in another room to the Internet via a router (the wireless PC uses the same router). The router is in the same room as the Win XP PC.

The Win XP Pro PC is attached by a cable to a printer, and it would be useful if the wireless PC upstairs could access that printer through connecting to the cabled PC downstairs.

Many thanks.

Since you already have a wireless connection from the PC upstairs you just need to add the printer to it.

For Windows 7 do this:

Start | Devices and Printers

Click on Add a Printer

Click on Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer

Windows will search for the printer, if it comes up highlight it and click Next

You must have permission to use this printer by doing this:

On the XP machine, the one the printer is connected to;

1. Start | Control Panel | Printers and Other Hardware | Printers and Faxes

2. Right click the printer you want to share and then click Sharing

3. The options you see on the Sharing tab differ depending on whether sharing is enabled on your computer.

I see text stating that printer sharing must be turned on.
You need to enable printer sharing by running the Network Setup Wizard. Start it by clicking the link on the Sharing tab, and then follow the instructions. Once sharing is enabled, begin this procedure again.

I see options for sharing or not sharing the printer.
On the Sharing tab, click Share this Printer and then type in a Share name for the Shared Printer. Since your sharing with a computer that has Windows 7 click Additional Drivers, click the environment and operating system for the other computer and click OK to install the additional drivers.

Note: You may need to go to the Printers manufacturing site and get Windows 7 drivers for the printer.

If you can't find post the make and model of the printer and we can help.

That's brlliant Murf - many many thanks. The XP PC won't take the Win 7 drivers for the printer(s), so I will download them to the Win 7 machine directly and hope that that works.

Cheers again.

Hello Murf

Yes, that worked - I have just successfully printed off a test page. The drivers need to be compatible with Win 7 so need to be installed on the remote machine.

Thanks again.
