Apple iBook G4 slow, spyware and virus check?

I have an Apple iBook that runs really slow when I am on the interent. Sometimes pages just close down by themselves and other times pages wont even open. What is my next step in trying to fix this?

No such thing as spyware of viruses on the Mac currently.

First step would be explain more about the laptop... OS version, RAM... etc.

Second step would probably be to use Disk Utility to repair permissions.

Look in the Applications/Utilities folder for an application names Disk Utility, Launch it., Then click your hard drive on the left. Then click the "Repair Permissions" button. Don't do anything else while it's working. If it repairs a great deal of items, run it again until there's nothing it repairs.

You should do this before AND after any installation on the Mac.

Is there anything else I should do? Do you think I need to update my browser. I am still using IE:Mac 5.2.3. If so, which one would you recommend?

Oh definitely IE is no longer even made for the Mac. Why not use Safari? It comes with OSX.

Safari is installed with OSX by default. You already have it. Look in your application folder. Firefox is decent too. www.firefox.com

There are newer version but I believe they require OS10.4+. The version you have is great for OS10.3.9
