AMD 2800+ speed problem
I'm putting together a basic system for a friend of my wife and, as luck would have it, it's causing me big headaches. The bios is recognising the cpu as a Sempron 2800+XP-M but is only running it at 800Mhz. There are no jumpers on the board, ECS75-A2, and the only FSB settings available are 200-255. So I can "overclock" it to 1.2Mhz, but this is a 1.6 cpu....I pulled down the latest bios update in a vain hope but that's made no difference either. Any help before I RMA? Thanks, Tony.
Edit: Issue resolved! It turns out that ECS and PC Chips might just be the same company, if they're not, they're very close to each other. A PC Chips bios update effected a cure and I've now a 1.6mhz processor, hoorah! Now for a little poke about at those other FSB settings to see if it'll go just a bit faster again ;-> Last edited by greyrider; September 18th, 2006 at 08:05 PM. |

sure it will The M's are good with heat... you can get it to 2.0 ghz stable..
I have my 4200+ @ 2.9 stable and thats a 700mhz oc. Only reading 42c under prime 95 after 3 days. |

For what it's worth, ECS bought PCChips. Btw, what's the FSB on that Sempron?

good question and what is the multimplier on? 200x 11=2200 thats what mine is stock and the Sempron will be lower. Must be a or is it 166?

FSB = 200. It's a very basic version of Award bios with no access to the multiplier and a limited range for FSB - but as I didn't get it for my own use, it's not a problem

It could be the processor is locked and you can't overclock it, if it is. And if you've got it up to 1.6 now, why overclock?
FSB would equal either 266, 333, or 400 but never equals 200. |

Why overclock? Because I can. The available FSB on this machine in bios is 200. The board is clock doubled thus resulting in 400. As it happens, it ran up to almost 2.0gig before locking up but, as I said, the build isn't for me so I reset it to 1.6 and boxed it all up, job done. Thanks all for considering the problem

You misunderstood me, a FSB is either 100, 133, 166, 200. Double pumped would then make the BIOS see it as; 200, 266, 333, or 400.

I'm not trying to argue semantics, score points or pretend to know more than I do, I bow to your superior knowledge and accept my humble place in the life of computer technology. What I do know is that the system I put together had an AMD Sempron 2800+XP-M cpu and that the Award bios gave me a choice of FSB starting at 200 and ending in 255, nothing else, no multipliers, no jumpers, nothing. Since updating the bios the system is now running the cpu at 1.66gig which would seem to indicate a clock doubled FSB of 200 to 400. What do I know? It's good enough for me. I'm grateful to those who took the time to read my plea for help and to at least begin to think what the problem may have been. The owner is, even as I type - I know because she's talking to my wife right now - happy with the build and is currently watching her nephew thrashing his brother at some nonsensical, time wasting, multi coloured, bleeping game. So all's well in the end. Best, respect, good wishes, have a nice day, peace, etc. Tony

I think you just misunderstood greyrider, dont think she was trying to prove her superiority..
Lets say your Cpu is a Sempron 2800+ with a fsb of 166 (most AMD's) multiplier is 11(stock of course). But it seems your is set to 10. ( It may be on auto) AMD's multiplier is not locked. Intels used to be though. Now take that 10x166=1.66 give or take a couple mhz. Amd's have always confused people. Like mine is a 4200x2 my fsb is (stock 200) 200x11=2.2ghz although I have my FSB up to 250..250x11=2.75ghz.. Might want to look around under cpu configuration and see if you can up or down your multplier. So its not really "doubled pumped" thats RAM,, ddr..dual channel memory. Pc3200 with only one stick of ram would only run at 200mhz not 400..2 sticks of the same size will run @400mhz. |

ohh ok.. I did not see the "basic" mobo settings.. Ya there are some of those out there. Glad I dont have one
All that matters is that ya got it fixed and theyr happy with it. Just remember Cpu FSB are not doubled only the RAM..... |

greyrider, I was not trying to prove anything, superior or not. I was only stating that which most people misinterpret in FSB sizes. Sorry you felt that way or thought I was trying to act the way you thought I did. I wasn't.
